Awareness Drive, 25th December 2013 Featured

Litter Free Lalbagh (LFL) is a citizen’s initiative started by visitors (walkers, runners etc) who have been a witnessing change happening in one of the most “Biologically Diverse” gardens of the world – “LALBAGH”.

With a declaration to have “Lalbagh - Litter Free” , a few individuals with a like-minded idea slowly discovered many such others over the next couple of weeks. In a month total strangers were working closely like a family sharing responsibilities of procuring our equipment (sticks, gloves, gunny bags) to transporting, storing and even cleaning.

LFL – has had clean up drives on EVERY SUNDAY MORNING (staring 18th August, after our launch on the 15th) till TODAY

It is this ability and willingness of the TEAM LFL (as we now call ourselves) to work around personal and professional commitments to make it on every Sunday mornings & official meetings is what we can attribute as one of our core strengths.

The clean-up drive by itself was a door opener for a communication with the Horticulture Department who more than welcomed us with open hands. The clean-up drives also had us see first-hand the challenges and realities faced in having Lalbagh Litter Free.

LFL – TODAY, along with the Department of Horticulture, Lalbagh held an Official Program wherein

  • Mr. Maheshwar (Director, Department of Horticulture) - Declared Lalbagh a “Plastic Free Zone” and had an Awareness Walk around Lalbagh along with the (Joint Director (Parks & Gardens) Mr. Shivakumar & Deputy Director Mr. Gunavantha) along with the Team LFL
  • Launched use of Paper Bags (as an alternative to Plastic) which would be made available at the Gates & Hopcoms stores in Lalbagh
  • Launched a “Security Deposit” sticker for ₹10/- for plastic items (bottles) sold at the Hopcoms outlets to ensure plastic waste is carried out / disposed of properly.

What’s next

  • We already have had talks with Mr. Sundar Raj Urs (NSS Program – Co-ordinator, Bangalore) and are in an advanced stage to depute NSS volunteers every weekend and doing the upcoming Flower Show in January. There were students from Vijaya College & Surana College who were part of our awareness drive today (despite this being their vacation time, the college co-ordinators did manage to reach out to their students to be present today)
  • January is the time for the next Flower show where once could expect over 1lac visitors on a single day. Our next challenge / step would be maintaining the sanctity of Lalbagh over the 9 days of the show.

Note :

LFL not affiliated to /under / initiative of any political party or organization. Though we regularly receive acknowledgement & participations from various individuals, organizations & corporates in our activities.
